WHS ’71 – REUNION REMARKS BY STEVE BARRETT

October 22, 2011

WELCOME CLASSMATES, AND WHAT A CROWD! WELLESLEY HIGH SCHOOL – 1971.  WHAT A TIME – WHAT A PLACE! IF ONLY I COULD REMEMBER IT!

ANYONE FEELING OLD TONIGHT?  40 YEARS – THAT’S A LONG TIME! I KNOW A FEW OF YOU FOLKS ARE EVEN PUSHING 60.  MUST HAVE BEEN THAT EXTRA YEAR OR TWO OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ENRICHMENT.

ANYWAY, I WAS INITIALLY WORRIED ABOUT FEELING AND LOOKING TOO OLD TO ATTEND THIS KIND OF THING BUT THEN RUTH TRIGG, MY WIFE OF 35 YEARS, IS WITH ME TONIGHT AND SHE’S OLDER.  AND THEN I’VE SPOTTED A FEW OTHER CLASS OF ’70 GRADS IN THE BUILDING.  NOW THAT’S OLD SO I’M NOT FEELING SO BAD.

SO NOW THAT I’VE GOT THE OBLIGATORY “OLD JOKES” OUT OF THE WAY, I’LL TAKE A MOMENT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE REUNION COMMITTEE:  SKIP SULLIVAN, SALLY MCCREERY CHISHOLM, JACKIE GIBSON PARKER, WENDY SEILER MURPHY, MOIRA NESTOR STANSELL & SCOTT SHEPHERD.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS. THIS IS A FIRST-RATE COMMITTEE, BUT THEY MADE THE MISTAKE OF ASKING ME TO SAY A FEW WORDS.  I AM NOT DESERVING BUT I AM HONORED TO DO THIS.  I’LL TRY TO BE BRIEF, BE CLEAR & THEN I’LL BE GONE.

WE WERE ALL BLESSED TO SHARE SOMETHING VERY SPECIAL 40+ YEARS AGO:

  • LIVING IN A PRIVELEGED & PROTECTED COMMUNITY
  • CHALLENGED IN OUR THINKING BY EXCEPTIONAL & COMMITTED TEACHERS
  • MENTORED & COUNSELED BY THE SAME
  • BEING ‘READIED’ – ALL 430 OR SO US BABY BOOMERS – TO STEP OUT INTO A FAIRLY TURBULENT WORLD

AND LIKE ALL HIGH SCHOOLS EVERYWHERE, WE HAD OUR CLIQUES, SEPARATE CIRCLES, CONCENTRIC CIRCLES, OVERLAPPING CIRCLES, BUT WE ALL HAD CERTAIN THINGS IN COMMON:

  • RED RAIDER SPORTS
  • SEMINAR DAYS & OPEN CAMPUS
  • HALL JAMS & THOSE ALL NIGHT PARTIES
  • SUNSHINE DAIRY & FRIENDLY’S FRENCH FRIES
  • THE BRUINS & THE RED SOX

AND WE ALL HAD THE MUSIC:

  • CLUB ’71, THE DAUGHTERS OF DADDY COOL, FUBAR AND MOTHER’S ONLY RIVAL
  • NOT TOO MENTION LED ZEPPILIN, THE DOORS, THE STONES

SOME OF US, NOT ALL, ALSO HAD:

  • ‘MIGHTY CYCLES’ AND ‘MAN OF LA MANCHA’
  • SPECIAL PARKING ON POND ROAD & BROOKSIDE AVE
  • LOTS OF SKIPPED SCHOOL DAYS

AND, FINALLY, SOME OF US EITHER INHALED, DRANK COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF BOONE’S FARM APPLE WINE AND OTHER FERMENTED BEVERAGES, OR BOTH!

I CAN’T REMEMBER WHAT I DID, AND PLEASE DON’T REMIND ME (OR TELL RUTH) IF YOU CAN.  LET’S ALL DWELL ON THE POSITIVES TONIGHT AND SIMPLY BE THANKFUL THAT WE MADE IT THROUGH WHS WITH A DIPLOMA.

MANY, BUT NOT ALL, OF OUR OLD CLASSMATES AND FRIENDS ARE HERE TONIGHT.  A GREAT TURNOUT BUT SOME COULDN’T MAKE IT.  MY OLD HOMEROOM PAL OF 6 YEARS – ARTHUR ‘ACE’ ADAMS – COULDN’T MAKE IT BUT HE’S NOW A PITCHING COACH IN THE ST. LOUIS CARDINALS ORGANIZATION – AND THE WORLD SERIES IS A GOOD EXCUSE.  SOME OTHERS LIVE FAR AWAY – AUSTRALIA, ISRAEL, DENMARK, ETC – AND COULDN’T MAKE THE TRIP.  (I KNOW THAT’S HAPPENED TO ME IN THE PAST.)  AND THEN THERE ARE OTHERS, DEAR FRIENDS & CLASSMATES, WHOM GOD HAS CHOSEN TO TAKE HOME BEFORE US.  WE MISS:

  • CHANDLER BECKER
  • RUTH BENS
  • BONNIE BUCKLEY
  • BILL ESHENWALD
  • GRANT EUSTIS
  • JUDY HAGMAN
  • LINDA PAQUETTE
  • ANDREA PETERSEN
  • LIBBY PIPER
  • ROB REED
  • JON ROYAL
  • JIM RUSSEL
  • KEVIN WALSH

TO THESE 13 CLASSMATES:  YOU MAY BE GONE, BUT YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN.*

FOR THE REST OF US HERE TONIGHT, WE HAVE THE NEXT FEW HOURS TO RECONNECT AND REIMAGINE THOSE SPECIAL DAYS.  WE CAN ALL CATCH-UP.

ANYONE HAVE A CHANCE TO READ SOME OF THOSE PERSONAL PROFILE STORIES ON THE REUNION WEBSITE?  WHAT A MOSIAC OF ACCOMPLISHMENT & CHALLENGE, SET-BACK AND VICTORY.  I WAS PARTICULARLY INSPIRED BY THE STORIES OF JANE HANSBERRY, JUDY LAYMAN, RICK MCDONNELL AND BRIAN JORDAN.  UNDERPINNING ALL OF THESE AN OPTIMISM THAT ‘LIFE IS GOOD’.  ONE OF MY FAVORITE COMMENTS FROM JEFF TAGGART:  LIFE IS A JOURNEY, THE CHALLENGES MAKE IT INTERESTING.

WELL, EVERYONE HAS A STORY AND I’M READY TO STOP TALKING, GRAB A BEVERAGE, AND START LISTENING.

IT’S GREAT TO BE TOGETHER.  HAVE FUN TONIGHT AND THANK YOU.

*At the reunion, some of you mentioned other classmates who are no longer with us. Please send an email with the names so we can make note.

Click on a picture below to enlarge and start the slide show. School photos have been reposted w/each school under the Hunnewell Challenge link with names if you are stumped!

If you would like any of the pictures at a higher resolution, please email whs1971@comcast.net with the picture(s) numbers. Photography credits go to Jay McCreery. Many thanks!
